An elementary school in Hunts Point held its annual summer music concert today, but this one was extra special.
P.S. 48's band took the stage despite the obstacles the teachers and students had to overcome. Over spring break the school was burglarized: computers, keyboards and several instruments were either stolen or damaged.
The performance went off without a hitch, making everyone at the school extremely proud.
Many in the community agree that music teacher Melissa Salguero deserves much of the credit for getting the band ready for its big day. Salguero was recently selected as a quarter-finalist for the 2015 Music Educator Award, which recognizes stand-out educators who've made significant contributions to their students.
Administrators and members of the PTA are now pushing for cameras in the school in the wake of the burglary.
