A beloved family-owned market in Yonkers celebrated a fresh start Sunday after a burglary earlier this month threatened its future.
La Hacienda, located at 1727 Central Park Ave., held a grand reopening by welcoming customers with free refreshments and treats as a way to thank the community that rallied behind the business during one of its most difficult moments.
Owners Richard Magana and Tanyi Arriaga said the burglary left them uncertain about whether they could continue operating.
“We had certain money there that was supposed to cover certain bills, and all of a sudden it's gone. So we were uncertain if we were going to be able to continue,” Magana said.
Despite the setback, Magana and Arriaga said the outpouring of support from customers and neighbors helped them move forward.
“The community has been [a] tremendous support for us,” Arriaga said. “They've rallied with us. We've had people stop in, bring flowers, bring hugs in moments that we felt broken.”
The reopening marked a new chapter for the family-run business and a testament to the power of community support in the face of adversity.
