A beloved family-owned deli in Orange County closed Thursday night after 50 years in business.
One by one, customers stopped by the Big 3 Deli in Newburgh just as they've done for decades. This time, however, it was to say their final goodbyes.
"People are sad. I know. It's an end of an era," said owner Cindy Gironda-Post. That era began with Gironda-Post's first generation Italian American parents and uncle back in the 1960s.
She has fond memories growing up in the deli.
"Eating dinner in the back. We always had family dinner, even though my parents worked 9 to 9," she recalled.
Gironda-Post and her brother grew up at the deli on North Plank Road, as have many of their customers.
"It's been family. Everything is homemade. It's the way we grew up," said customer Sue McGuire.
Gironda-Post took over the family business after her parents, Nettie and Amo, died.
This year, she made the difficult decision to sell the building and close up shop to focus on running her own business – a day care nearby in town.
And while the goodbyes aren't necessarily forever, the Big 3 Deli's closure is.
"Someone just said to me the other day, everything is made with love here," Gironda-Post added.
