Bedford wants out from suit over immigrant's murder
Attorneys for Bedford's insurance company want the town dropped from a civil lawsuit, claiming the town's police officers had nothing to do with the death of an illegal immigrant in Mount Kisco.
Bedford police have admitted that earlier on the night of April 28, they took a drunken Rene Perez from a store in Bedford back into Mount Kisco at his request. A few hours later, Perez made a 911 call from a Mount Kisco Laundromat and three cops responded. Perez was later left for dead on Byram Lake Road in Bedford. All three Mount Kisco officers involved have been placed on desk duty. Last week, the grand jury began hearing testimony in the criminal investigation of Perez's death.
In papers filed Tuesday, the attorneys asked that Bedford's name be dropped from the civil lawsuit that names it, the Village of Mount Kisco and one Mount Kisco police officer for violating Perez's civil rights by allegedly dumping him from town to town. White Plains attorney Jonathan Lovett filed the suit in May on behalf of Anibal Perez, a brother of Rene Perez. Lovett says he believes Mount Kisco Police Officer George Bubaris is responsible for the eventual death of Rene Perez. Lovett also says there may be additional lawsuits filed by immigrants who say they have also been dumped by police in the area. Related Information Pressure mounts on Mt.
