Bedford residents gathered for a Kentucky Derby viewing party Saturday to watch the local horse Upstart race at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
Upstart was born on a Friday the 13th at Sunny Field Farm in 2012.
John Grau, the farm manager at Sunny Field, sold Upstart at 17 months old, but he says the horse is known for a great personality.
"We're just all thrilled," Grau says. "He's on the biggest racing stage there is."
Unfortunately, it wasn't a good showing for Upstart. He and his rider finished 18th, last in the race.
The horse American Pharoah placed first in the race.
