A bear was fatally struck in Middletown Sunday, despite rescuers' best efforts to help.
State police say the animal was hit by a vehicle on I-84 in Middletown.
A FedEx truck stopped to protect the bear from being hit further.
An Erlich Pest Control wildlife rescuer on the scene says the animal suffered extensive injuries and had to be put down by the Department of Environmental Conservation after efforts to help.
“I cried. I have tears in my eyes now,” said Aaron Lane, “It was what was right. It was what was needed to be done. No animal needs to suffer like that.”
It’s not clear if whoever hit the bear remained at the scene
