Local law enforcement officials were at the Westchester County Center in White Plains Wednesday teaching residents about what to do in an active shooter situation.

County police gave dozens of residents some practical tools and skills they could use to survive an active shooter event in their workplace.

Known as “civilian response to active shooter events" or “CRASE,” the two-hour PowerPoint training class is a national program. County police already provide CRASE training to hundreds of county employees, many school district employees, and other members of law enforcement.

The presentation touched on the mass shootings in Las Vegas, San Bernardino and Orlando. Last month, in Aurora, Illinois, a man shot and killed five co-workers at a manufacturing plant after he was fired from his job. County police say the CRASE training is built around the principles of avoid, deny and defend.

“If there is threat, get away from it as best as possible. Deny is like a hide, but it’s a little more assertive, in that best as possible...barricade that door, defend themselves...if someone is trying to take their life,” says Sgt. Amery Bernhardt, of Westchester County Police.

The CRASE training was offered free to the public.  Depending on today’s response, it may be offered again at other times.
