Rainbows and bright colors could be seen all over the community on Sunday as Bay Ridge became "GayRidge" for the day.
Community members and elected officials gathered to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.
"GayRidge" started as a Facebook community group in 2019. Within the past year, they have seen their membership increase and started the website GayRidge.org.
Newlywed couple Larissa and Mckenna Santiago Coyle were happy to attend the event. It was where they became engaged in 2020. They say they "normally go to Manhattan or downtown Brooklyn to feel accepted. Now we can be comfortable blocks away from home.
A few vendors were on hand, including Girl Scout Troop 2429 of Bay Ridge. They chose to give back to the LGBTQ+ community to earn their silver medal.
“We chose this because it resonated with most of us,” said Girl Scout Crowley Keating. “Everyone needs to be aware. We are to be treated equal.”
People who attended the event hope other neighborhoods take note and host all-inclusive events like this.
