A lithium-ion battery storage facility is burning in Warwick.
A news release from the Town of Warwick Police Department says it was first reported at the 28 Church Street facility around 10:15 p.m. It says the fire was contained to the site.
“The Orange County Hazardous Materials Unit is on scene monitoring air quality. There is currently no danger to the public,” the release says.
It was not immediately clear what caused the facility to catch fire.
News 12 reported in June 2024 that the facility was reopening following two fires there in 2023. At the time, Warwick Mayor Michael Newhard said Convergent Power and Energy would “reopen under a monitored ‘recuperation plan’ with new lithium-ion batteries that the company considered to be waterproof.
