Barge carrying recyclables and scrap metal catches fire in the Hutchinson River in Mount Vernon

A barge caught fire Wednesday evening on the Hutchinson River in Mount Vernon. The fire started just before 6 p.m. Wednesday. The barge was carrying recyclables and scrap metal, along with junk cars.

A barge caught fire Wednesday evening on the Hutchinson River in Mount Vernon.
The fire started just before 6 p.m. Wednesday. The barge was carrying recyclables and scrap metal, along with junk cars.
Firefighters managed to contain the fire to the barge. Officials say they are waiting to bring a crane in so they can lift the debris off of it. The barge belongs to Pascap Scrap Recyclers in the Bronx. Its website says it is one of the largest scrap metal processors in the tri-state area.
No injuries were reported.
