As summer break draws to a close, families in the Hudson Valley are gearing up for an exciting and bustling week as students head back to school.

Rye High School is among the many districts in the region that enthusiastically welcomed students back today.

"We're really excited for all the kids and families to be returning, our staff is thrilled their plans are made, their rooms are ready," said Superintendent Dr. Eric Byrne.

Rye High School recently earned recognition in the U.S. News and World Report rankings, securing the 17th spot in the state and the 167th position nationally. While academics remain a central focus, school administrators emphasize the importance of fostering connections and a sense of belonging among students.

To achieve this, new students are paired with older students or peer mentors to help them acclimate and feel at home.

"They spend once a month working with those students in individualized, small groups so they get to know them, have their questions answered. It follows a curriculum written by kids, so it's all really good things," explained Suzanne Kelly Short, principal of Rye High School.

High temperatures and humidity are a factor for this first week back. School administrators are closely monitoring conditions, especially for any outdoor activities.
