Scarsdale police say they are cooperating with Greenburgh police and the district attorney’s office to investigate how a police officer handled a traffic stop where the driver was later allegedly involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash.

Police say that the driver, Antonio Robles-Sanchez, was involved in a minor crash in Scarsdale on Aug. 26 at the intersection of Mamaroneck and Post roads. An officer let Robles-Sanchez go without any further investigation.

Less than an hour later, Greenburgh police say a pickup truck driven by Robles-Sanchez jumped a curb on East Hartsdale Avenue and killed 65-year-old Stephanie Kavourias. Officials say that Robles-Sanchez did not stop after the crash and was arrested shortly after in White Plains.

Robles-Sanchez was charged with vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal crash.

Scarsdale police say the officer who handled the initial crash remains on duty.

This all comes as the town of Greenburgh scrambles to make safety improvements to better protect pedestrians. There are now more police patrols at the spot where the hit-and-run happened.

The town is holding a memorial at its meeting next Wednesday to allow Kavourias’ friends and loved ones to share memories.
