Maher took to national airwaves recently, saying the Crossroads Hotel told the vets to leave on May 12 as migrants were arriving. He had gotten his information from Sharon Toney Finch, who runs YIT, a nonprofit that houses veterans.
Maher said he learned just after 3 p.m. that YIT was dishonest and fabricated facts.
Crossroads' management insisted that a screenshot Finch shared that indicates she paid $37,000 to house 20 veterans was not truthful.
Maher wants the authorities to look into this.
In a statement released Thursday night, Maher said in part he is "devastated and disheartened" by the false statements after speaking with Sharon Toney-Finch on Thursday.
He wrote, "Their gross misrepresentation of the facts surrounding our homeless veterans is appalling... I am no longer affiliated in any capacity with YIT nor offering it any more of my help."
Maher is now calling for the New York state Attorney General's office and the Orange County District Attorney to investigate.
