Time is running out to cut down a Christmas tree this year, as reports show numerous area farms have already sold out of trees.

Wilkens Farm owner Randy Pratt says his farm sold out after going through 1,000 cut-your-own Christmas trees in Yorktown.

"You know I hate to tell people when they arrive that unfortunately there's no trees left," says Pratt.

Farmers say the overall supply of Christmas trees nationwide has fallen over the last few years. In New York, a needle disease has been affecting Douglas firs and has taken out a good portion of farmers' crops.

Sean Pelkey, owner of Stuart's Farm in Somers, says their crop is almost entirely gone as well.

"Probably last weekend we pretty much sold out on a good variety of the trees we have left to cut," says Pelkey.

Stuart's Farm says it will continue selling its Christmas trees until this year's crop is gone, but calling ahead is highly advised.
