The Archdiocese of New York has released its final list of parish mergers, and several churches in the Hudson Valley will be affected.
The reorganization is one of the largest in the Archdiocese's history, and comes due to a shortage of priests and dwindling resources.
The shuffle includes Our Lady of Mount Carmel in White Plains, which will merge with Saint John the Evangelist. In Dobbs Ferry, Our Lady of Pompeii will merge with Sacred Heart of Dobbs Ferry.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Ardsley is set to merge with St. Matthew's in Hastings-on-Hudson.
Father Matthew Fernan, of St. Matthew's, says that on one hand, the change is exciting because a new parish will be formed, bringing together the two communities. However, he does expect some growing pains that include friction and hesitation between the two parishes.
In total, 31 churches will merge into 14 new parishes. St. Matthew's will be among 11 of the merging parishes that will continue to use both building.
The decision to merge the churches comes after more than a year of deliberation by parish leaders and the archdiocesan planning board.
