The pandemic has made the holidays a lot harder on many families, especially on grandparents who are the primary caregivers of grandkids.
So as part of her annual Angel Project, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers) collected gifts from 200 local volunteers to fulfill the Christmas wish lists of 200 caregivers. “Many times, these grandparents have so little of their own, but they would not want to lose their children to foster care, so they take them in. And a lot of times, these grandparents are choosing between whether to get their medicines or feed their children, they’re making some very hard choices,” says Stewart-Cousins.
Two of these grandparents received their gifts today in Yonkers. Sharon Johnson is raising two of her grandkids and her mother, Marcia, is raising one grandchild as well. “It felt good being given something, because we’re always giving, not that I mind it, but it felt good to receive, because I was not expecting anything,” says Johnson.
Here are the Yonkers nonprofits that connected the Angel Project with deserving grandparents.
  • Family Service Society Yonkers
  • Family Ties
  • YWCA Yonkers
  • Calvary Baptist Church
  • Westchester County Department of Social Services
  • Theodore Young Community Center
  • Slater Center
  • Nepperhan Community Center
  • Christian Love Tabernacle
  • Community Baptist Church
  • Metropolitan AMEZ Church
