The American Cancer Society raised awareness about breast cancer today at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets in Central Valley.
The last time the American Cancer Society was able to hold a kickoff like this was 2019, so it was a big deal to be back in action in person. "Remain hopeful, stay vigilant…it’s so important to have the support and secondly the research and being able to have access to resources," says two-time breast cancer survivor Carol Johnson-Cromer, of Newburgh
Cancer screenings and doctor visits in general fell off over the past three years during the COVID-19 pandemic, so there's a big push to remind everyone to get back on track with their health and getting involved in breast cancer awareness events. "There's a number of different ways that we can raise awareness - 90% of women that are diagnosed with breast cancer today survive, so it's big on getting people screened," says Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus.
"People will be really excited to see that there's a lot of things that they've been used to in years past, but also so many things we learned during the pandemic," says Anna Tricino, of the American Cancer Society.
The ACS is hosting the 2022 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks at Woodbury Common and at Manhattanville College in Purchase on Oct. 16.
