Amazon drivers are supposed to drop off things, not take off with them, but that’s exactly what June Ruckel says happened last Friday when she watched her Ring camera from work in disbelief.
Ruckel says an Amazon driver could be seen stealing her son’s dirt bike from her house on Chester Avenue in Congers.
“I’m like, 'Oh my God. He’s stealing the bike,'” said Ruckel.
The driver, 28-year-old Vito Bellantuono, from Dutchess County, is allegedly seen walking into Ruckel’s backyard from a neighbor’s property and walking off with the bike toward his Amazon truck.
“I was like, 'Oh my God, what do I do?' I tried to call my husband at work, but he was in an important meeting,” said Ruckel.
The homeowner ended up calling Clarkstown police who caught up with Bellantuono about a quarter-mile away.
Police say the bike was found in the Amazon truck and returned.
Ruckel and her husband, Ed, didn’t press charges for the theft, but police charged Bellantuono with DWI, DUAI and operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.
The Ruckels say they’re sharing their experience publicly as a warning to others.
“Everyone orders off of Amazon, which is great for convenience, but we really have to be more alert. We don’t know who is showing up at our house,” said Ruckel.
News 12 reached out to Amazon for comment but didn’t hear back
