ALS ice bucket challenge held in Yonkers for first time since founder's death

11h agoHundreds of people turned out at Empire City Casino in Yonkers Sunday for the "ice bucket challenge" to raise money and awareness of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
This year's event was significant because it was the first since the death of the challenge's co-founder, Yonkers native Pat Quinn. He died of the disease back in November 2020 at the age of 37.
He was diagnosed with the muscle weakening, nervous system disease at the age of 30. There is currently no cure for the disease.
Quinn did not live to see his hopes for a cure become a reality, but the hundreds of supporters who gathered at the casino are carrying on the fight for him.
Pat Quinn's father, Pat Quinn Sr., said his son wanted people outside the ALS community to become involved and to be aware of the disease and its impact.
Quinn Sr. and supporters added that they will keep on fighting, repeating Quinn Jr.'s words, "Every August until a cure."
