The death of a mother and her 8-year-old daughter in an alleged drunken driving incident has sparked some debate Wednesday in Brewster.
State police say illegal immigrant Zacharia Conses-Garcia hit Lori Donohue and her daughter Kayla Monday night as they were leaving a dance studio. Authorities say Conses-Garcia is already being sought out by the federal government due to his immigration status.
Neighbors are outraged that Conses-Garcia is an illegal immigrant from Guatemala who doesn?t own a license. ?It?s terrible these people drive with no license and enjoy our hospitality and do this to our community, it's not fair,? says neighbor Thomas Hunt.
Donohue?s godmother, Carol Watkins, says she is grieving but is doing her best to console Donohue?s husband Bobby and their 5 year-old son. Officials at JFK Elementary School have since offered crisis counseling to Kayla?s fellow second-grade classmates.
A memorial for Donohue and Kayla lies at the crash site where visitors are placing flowers, personal notes and even one of Kayla?s old dance costumes. A funeral is scheduled Saturday for both Donohue and Kayla.
Meanwhile, Conses-Garcia is charged with DWI and vehicular manslaughter, but prosecutors say the charge could be upgraded to murder.
