Police say multiple children were injured when a blowup slide tipped over at a field day event for Wyandanch elementary students.

According to police, the incident happened at Wyandanch Park on Mount Avenue at approximately 9:45 a.m.

Police say one child was taken to the hospital for a broken leg and another four children were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Fourteen children were on the slide at the time of the incident.

The injured children were 6 and 7 years old.

Some parents told News 12 they weren't notified on the parent portal until nearly three hours after the incident happened.

"I'm just nervous, I'm sweating, I'm saying, 'What's going on, multiple kids injured,' that's all I heard so that could be my child," says Christina Hicks. "My child said she had field day today, so I just came down here to see what's going on and to my surprise, they're still going. It should be shut down, sorry."

The company Jump Around Party Rental says they rented out three inflatables to the Wyandanch Union Free School District, including the slide that toppled over on the tennis court.

Zoraida Rodriguez, manager of Jump Around Party Rental, tells News 12 there should be no more than two people on the slide at a time. She also acknowledges that clients are given almost no training when the equipment is dropped off.

"We normally don't provide instructions," Rodriguez says. "We are assuming they know the safety risk."

Rodriguez says the school did not have adequate staffing to look at all the children going on the bouncer, and that's why the accident happened.

"There were too many kids on that bouncer and that's why it flipped over," Rodriguez says.

Abe Kaplan, who owns a different inflatable rental company, says somebody dropped the ball. He advises parents to make sure an adult is watching inflatables at all times and be wary when they're set up on hard surfaces that are difficult to secure.

"You can't drive a stake into cement," Kaplan, who owns The Big Bounce Theory says. "You can't drive a stake into a tennis court and you can't drive a stake into pavement."

It's not clear who was assigned to be watch the slide at the time of the incident.

The Wyandanch Union Free School District declined an interview, but released a statement, saying in part, "The district is doing a thorough investigation with the company supplying the inflatables into the cause of this situation."

Field day events continued as planned following the collapse.
