Lawyers for the state Attorney General’s Office are reportedly accusing Mount Vernon Richard Thomas of using city funds to pay his personal legal bills.

The lawyers detailed the explosive claim in a letter to Judge Barry Warhit, according to published a report.

It is not known how much money was paid or to what lawyers.

Thomas is already facing six felony charges of misusing campaign funds and not correctly reporting it.

Mayor Thomas parted ways last week with his second set of criminal lawyers.  He hired prominent New York City attorney Anthony Ricco. Thomas is also asking the judge to allow him to hire two Florida attorneys with close ties to controversial businessman Joe Spezio, who is the city's deputy police commissioner.   

Reports of Mayor Thomas attempting to use city funds to pay his legal bills is not new. He's embroiled in a bitter lawsuit against city Comptroller Deborah Reynolds, whom he's accused of not paying the city's bills.  She is fighting back, telling News 12 that the mayor tried to force her to pay for $900,000 of his personal attorney fees, which she has refused to do.

The mayor's attorney released a scathing statement, in part blasting the Attorney General’s Office for an “unjustified smear campaign.” They also accuse the office of trying to slander the mayor with innuendos that are designed to deny him a fair trial.

The mayor is due back in court next Wednesday, and more may be learned about the new allegations by the attorney general’s office.
