A local organization is mobilizing to send personal hygiene and first aid supplies to hard hit Puerto Rico.

"Trees are down, there is no electricity, people are in need of water," said Millie Gutierrez, executive assistant at AFYA Foundation. "It's just, just heartbreaking."

Gutierrez spoke Tuesday to News 12 from Arecibo, Puerto Rico.

Her trip to visit family was interrupted by Hurricane Fiona.

Now she is focusing on relief work and gathering intel on where supplies are needed and what organizations can distribute them.

"Houses have been destroyed. People have nothing," she said.

At AFYA's warehouse in Yonkers, staff and volunteers spent Tuesday sorting donated medical supplies and packing bags to send to the storm-ravaged island.

Arilene Garcia spent the day itemizing a list of supplies being packed that will be loaded onto a JetBlue plane headed for Puerto Rico in a matter of days.

"I'm actually helping the people, even if it's like something small, like it's still helping them," she said.

The work is familiar. Many of these same volunteers mobilized five years ago after Hurricane Maria dealt a devastating blow to the island.

Amid ongoing relief efforts, AFYA has developed strong partners to identify what supplies are needed and where they need to go.

"They are conducting assessments right now we've been in discussions with them they will be working with us to distribute the supplies," said David Bourns, chief operating officer.
