It's expected to be one of the busiest travel days since
the pandemic as people look to get away for the holiday weekend.
Nearly 48 million
Americans are expected to travel for the holiday weekend, according to AAA
estimates.
That is the second highest for Independence Day travel.
Over 3 million of those travelers are expected to travel by plane, with the majority driving.
Benjamin Williamson, a businessman from Florida, was at Westchester County Airport and says he’s seeing a rise in people flying.
“I’ve been traveling a lot throughout COVID,” Williamson says. “It’s gotten busier now.”
AAA Northeast Senior Manager of Public Affairs Robert Sinclair Jr. says people seem to be engaging in “revenge travel,” which means they are going to take a trip when they normally wouldn’t take a trip.
“They’re going to do more things,” Sinclair Jr. says. “Stay longer. Spend more money. I think that’s manifesting itself this time with a lot of people taking Fourth of July trips that might not normally take Fourth of July trips.”
Some at Westchester County Airport, like Bronxville resident Branca, tell News 12 that they are excited to get back to traveling after staying home during the pandemic.
“I’m excited and nervous,” Branca says. “Can’t wait to get there.”
