AAA is estimating that about 36.1 million people are going to be traveling 50 miles or more during this Memorial Day weekend, which is the highest number since 2008.
AAA says the long, cold winter is likely contributing to people's desire to get away and enjoy the holiday. It also says the lower unemployment rate and the fact that people have more disposable income is contributing to the boom.
The service is reminding motorists to be careful while driving due to the increase in people on the road.
The estimated number of travelers is 1.5 percent higher than last year.
