A hug from a Rockland County doctor inspired one woman to help others in their fight against breast cancer.
Isabella Naana Asante is currently on a mission to help breast cancer patients beat the disease in Ghana. She overcame breast cancer herself in 2015 while working as a traveling nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern.
Her foundation called Embrace Society started because of the hug she got from Dr. Karen Karsif after being diagnosed. Dr. Karsif recently traveled to Ghana with Asante to gauge what is needed in their health care facilities.
"It's really heartbreaking. And when I was in the northern part of Ghana, I saw the area they had for breast care and it was one room," she said.
They would like to see more support staff for patients, advocate for more breast cancer awareness, more education and even build a breast care center.
Asante needs money to do all that, so she's been fundraising.
"I'm just very excited about what we're doing…and do it better," said Asante.
Anyone interested in more information about the Embrace Society can email inasante@embracesociety.org.
