7 tips to keep students safe from stranger danger
It’s important to talk to children about stranger danger and suspicious activities around school.
Review the tips below with your family to help keep your children safe:
1. Students should walk in groups, not alone.
2. Avoid distractions, such as cellphones, and pay attention to their surroundings.
3. If you’re approached by a stranger, run away and seek help from others.
4. If a stranger grabs you, do everything you can to stop him or her from pulling you away. Drop to the ground, kick, hit, bite, and scream. Do whatever it takes to attract the attention of others who can help you. One school district recommends that if someone is dragging you away, scream, “this is not my dad,” or “this is not my mom.”
5. Never talk to strangers or accept rides or gifts from strangers.
6. Immediately report any incident that makes you uncomfortable. Report suspicious activity to your school and police department
7. Know your home phone number and address, parent/guardians’ work numbers, the number of another trusted adult, and how to use 911 for emergencies.
