Town of Newburgh police say a Marlboro woman was stabbed in the leg Tuesday morning outside of a watermelon truck at a busy intersection.
The incident happened in a deli parking lot on Route 9W, near Carter Avenue., shortly after 10:30 a.m., according to police. Authorities say they responded to the scene for a report of a shooting but that the 59-year-old victim’s injury was later determined to be a stab wound.
“Right in the middle of the day. Crazy,” said one woman nearby, who didn’t want to provide her name.
Police were seen focusing their search for evidence between a Honda SUV and the box truck selling watermelons. An evidence marker was seen placed below the driver’s side door of the SUV.
So far, it’s not clear if the victim was a customer or a person selling watermelons.
Authorities say the injured woman was treated and released from the hospital.
People nearby say they’re surprised by the mid-day attack in such a busy area near several business.
“That’s scary. Very scary."
Town of Newburgh police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact detectives at 845-564-1100.
