A 5-year-old boy returned home to Long Island Thursday after spending 11 months in a Valhalla hospital.
Luke Dunn went into cardiac arrest after falling into his family's pool in Greenlawn, Long Island. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and has been recovering at Blythedale Children's Hospital.
"He's definitely not 100%, so we have to really see what our new normal looks like," says Luke's mom Stephanie Griffin.
Luke's mom says her son couldn't lift his head or maintain eye contact. She says he's relearning how to walk and working on his speech, but he is improving.
"Luke has emerged into the boy we knew him to be prior to the accident," says Griffin.
"Seeing him come this far is just such a nice thing to see," says pediatric nurse practitioner Julie Miezejeski.
Luke is now heading home to be with his triplet brother and sister and start kindergarten.
His mom says there's so much they're excited to do.
"Take him for a haircut. He hasn't had a haircut in more than one year, bring him to the beach," she says.
She says his siblings can't wait to have him home.
"I think they're excited to have a slumber party. They've always slept in the same room since they were born," says Griffin.
