Community members honored the NYPD detective killed in the mass shooting at a building in Midtown Manhattan with a vigil on Friday night.
Local leaders gathered for an interfaith prayer service to honor Islam's life at the 47th precinct where he was stationed.
"Detective Islam served his community and our great city every day with purpose," said Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson.
Loved ones and colleagues gathered Thursday for his funeral, where he was promoted to detective posthumously. Islam's body was carried out of a Parkchester mosque and taken to New Jersey for burial.
