Jaelynn Wesley, William Williams, Rafael Diaz and Margaret Ennin were sworn in on Tuesday at Yonkers City Hall as the first-ever student ex-officio members within the Board of Education.

The four students will not be able to vote but will be able to make their voices and peers voices heard in school board meetings.

The decision comes as part of a new law, originally proposed by state Sen. Shelley Mayer, that all New York state boards of education must have at least one student member by July 1, 2025.

The students News 12 spoke with say they have a variety of ideas they want to discuss to improve the district for its students, ranging from revitalizing the music programs and instruments, to prioritizing inclusivity for all.

"I want to make students feel like going to class is the most amazing thing ever," said William Williams.

"The sky is the limit and at Yonkers, we're rocketing there," said Jaelynn Wesley.
