Water fountains and faucets have been turned off at 39 schools in Yonkers due to concerns about lead in the water.
District officials did not provide News 12 with a list of the affected schools.
John Carr, who oversees facilities at Yonkers' public schools, says old faucets and drinking fountains made with brass fittings and solder will cause lead to show up in samples.
"The older they are, the more likely they are to be leaching lead into the water," says Carr.
Voluntary testing began at Yonkers schools in April. So far, about 80 outlets out of 1,000 have come back with "actionable levels," meaning the lead levels are high enough for the district to shut them down.
Custodians in the schools will be flushing water sources from all pipes before children arrive at school next week, according to Superintendent Dr. Edwin Quezada.
Dr. Quezada says parents will not know the final results until all of the testing is complete approximately one week.
He also assures students that the lead levels will not jeopardize anyone's health.
Elevated levels of lead have not been found in the city's water supply system.
