Three firefighters were injured in a three-alarm fire that destroyed a Mount Vernon pastry factory Monday.
The flames broke out at Artuso Pastry on South 12th Avenue around 6:30 a.m.
Firefighters struggled for nearly six hours to extinguish the flames. All of the bakery's employees escaped safely.
Authorities said the fire started in a boiler, though it's unclear what caused it to catch fire.
The factory, which manufactures and sells pastries to supermarkets and wholesale distributors, employed 40 people.
Artuso Bakery has two other locations in the Bronx and Mamaroneck.
