A three-alarm fire that broke out Thursday night in White Plains damaged several apartment units. Nine apartments at Chateu Condominiums at 87 North Broadway were impacted by the fire. Officials say the fire broke out on the second-floor of the building around 10:30 p.m. and spread to other parts of the building. "Flames were spreading out from the second floor," says White Plains Fire Department Lt. Charles Valero. "We were trying to push it out and push it out." Fire officials had to cut into the roof of the building to keep the fire from spreading. Valero says the type of building made it even harder to battle the fire. "These are tough buildings. This is a type three construction," says Valero. "So, the outside is very strong, but the inside is all wood floors. You usually have what's called a white wall. The bathrooms and kitchens are usually together, and it goes up the pipe chase and extends to the floors." The Red Cross says everyone was evacuated and taken to a warm place. Some residents were able to return to their apartments. Fire officials say they believe the fire started in the kitchen.
