A man was sentenced for stabbing a Bronx mother 22 times in March 2025, according to Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark.
Prosecutors say Christopher Joseph, 23, will serve 8 1/2 years behind bars and five years of post-release supervision for attacking Kaitlynn Berman inside her home, while her 3-year-old daughter was just a room away.
According to the DA’s office, an order of protection was issued during Friday’s sentencing, barring Joseph from contacting Berman, who once considered her assailant a friend.
Joseph's trial date was initially set for June 2026, but faced delays, partially due to the due to the Bronx Defendants Strike. Joseph pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted murder on Sept. 16.
During his plea hearing, Joseph admitted he tried to kill Berman during the brutal kitchen knife attack, which left Berman nearly blind and with permanent nerve damage on the right side of her face.
On Dec. 10, 2025, Judge Darlene Goldberg released Joseph on his own recognizance, without bail, after the D.A. failed to meet a key deadline to set bail.
The DA's office told News 12 they wanted Joseph's cash bail set at $1 million.
News 12 spoke with Berman multiple times, including six months after Joseph’s release, as she continued waiting for the trial to kick off.
“I don't go outside by myself,” Berman said. “I just feel like something is going to happen every time I'm outside."
Prosecutors previously said they were seeking a 10-year prison sentence followed by five years of parole.
Berman expressed frustration over this proposed sentence.
"Twenty-two years would sound fair," Berman said. "I feel like 10 years that they're trying to offer is not enough."
Christopher was sentenced on Wednesday.
"This defendant was invited into the home of the victim, a woman that he knew. He stabbed her over a dozen times while her daughter was in the next room," said DA Clark. "Fortunately, the victim survived this vicious attack. With this sentence, I hope she can heal from this life-changing encounter."
