College students at SUNY Purchase and Fordham University walked out Tuesday, joining a nationwide movement calling for new restrictions and guardrails around artificial intelligence.

The protest, organized nationally by a group called "Irreplaceable," drew dozens of students from different majors. Organizers are calling for an “AI freeze.”

Among the students was senior Ryan Dolinsky, who studies math, computer science and social sciences. As they get ready to graduate, Dolinsky said they are concerned about AI replacing coding and other entry-level jobs that students could otherwise pursue after college.

Others expressed concern about AI's impact on learning and cognitive development.

"People aren't able to read or write anymore. People can't write basic essays. They need AI to be able to do it for them," said SUNY Purchase senior Zoe Marks.

At Fordham University, freshman Quincy Aust described AI as a dangerous and unregulated tool.

Students taking part in the nationwide demonstration are calling for stronger regulations surrounding the technology.
