An overnight crash involving at least three tractor-trailers and two passenger vehicles on I-80 in Allamuchy sent multiple people to the hospital as crews worked to clear debris from the roadway.

Allamuchy fire crews responded to the interstate just after midnight Monday for reports of a multi-vehicle crash, according to the Allamuchy Fire Department.

When first responders arrived on the eastbound side of the highway, they found one tractor-trailer that had flipped onto its side, as well as two other tractor-trailers that appeared to have been involved in the crash. Crews also found two damaged passenger vehicles. Photos posted by firefighters show that one of the trucks spilled part of its load of produce, including bags of lettuce, onto the roadway.

Medical crews from the Allamuchy-Green First Aid Squad were also called to provide medical assistance and transported multiple people to an area hospital, the fire department said on social media.

Multiple eastbound lanes of I-80 were closed through the early morning hours as crews worked to clear the vehicles and debris and replace the damaged guardrail.

"This is the eighth accident on the highway we have responded to in the last 24 hours," the Allamuchy Fire Department said on social media.

Firefighters urged motorists to be cautious when driving in the area.
