More than 1,000 New Jersey voter registration records need to be corrected or reviewed following a new examination of the state's voter rolls, according to Gov. Mikie Sherrill's administration.

The findings include about 750 voter registrations tied to a Motor Vehicle Commission software error. State officials said no noncitizens were involved.

The announcement comes just months after the governor revealed that more than 6,000 people who indicated they were not U.S. citizens had been mistakenly registered to vote.

According to the governor's office, about 750 people selected "no" when responding to an age eligibility prompt during the voter registration process, but their records were still transmitted for voter registration.

State officials said those individuals likely selected the wrong option by mistake because they were all old enough to vote. However, because of their responses, the registrations are now considered legally invalid and must be corrected.

The review also uncovered more than 400 additional records requiring correction or further review. Sherrill's administration said those individuals had been entered into the system as eligible voters, despite some being incarcerated.

The latest findings prompted renewed calls for a broader review of the state's voter registration system.

"This makes an expanded investigation and a comprehensive audit of our voter rolls that much more important so we can get them cleaned up," said New Jersey Senate Republican Leader Anthony Bucco in a statement. "We now have even more evidence that there were serious weaknesses in New Jersey's voter registration system."

Sherrill said her administration is implementing several reforms aimed at improving the accuracy of voter registration records. Those changes include an automated audit process that will verify voter registration data from the MVC before it is sent to the state Department of Elections, a correction plan for records flagged during those audits, and additional signage and prompts at MVC locations to help customers better understand voter eligibility requirements.
