He lost his eyesight, but not his vision: New Jersey artist uses AI to create again

The Ridgefield Park artist spent nearly four decades creating artwork for romance novels, producing more than 1,000 covers during his career.

For Jon Paul Ferrara, art has always been more than a career. It’s how he tells stories, connects with people and expresses himself.

The Ridgefield Park artist spent nearly four decades creating artwork for romance novels, producing more than 1,000 covers during his career as a romance illustrator.

Ferrara said his work connected him with readers around the world. He received letters from people who told him his covers emotionally drew them into the stories.

But in 2020, Ferrara’s life changed.

He underwent surgery to remove a benign brain tumor. He went into surgery with his vision and came out with severe vision loss.

Despite losing his sight, Ferrara said he never asked, “Why me?”

Instead, he focused on finding a way forward.

That eventually led him to artificial intelligence.

Ferrara began experimenting with AI in August 2025, using tools including ChatGPT and Gemini. What started as an experiment soon became a way for him to return to the thing he loved most: creating art.

Ferrara doesn’t simply give AI a basic prompt and accept the result. He uses his decades of experience as an artist to guide the technology, describing everything from lighting and colors to camera angles, composition and where each character should stand.

“It starts with a thought and then it’s all up here. Everything’s imagination,” Ferrara said.

Because he cannot see the images being created, his caregivers help him review the artwork and describe what they see.

Ferrara says AI has given him a way to feel connected to his art again.

“I just could never stop. I can’t get enough of my art and I still can. And now I’m creating again through the power of AI in collaboration with me,” he said.

For nearly a year, Ferrara has been creating spiritual artwork and sharing it on social media with help from his caregivers.

He says the technology has also helped him reconnect with people around the world.

“I feel like I have my eyes, even though I can’t see what I’m creating,” Ferrara said.

Throughout his career, Ferrara has remained passionate about storytelling through art.

“I live my life around my art,” he said.

Now, he is preparing to share his newest work with the public.

On Dec. 8, Ferrara’s artwork will be featured in “The Spirit From Within,” a virtual gallery showcasing his work and giving people a chance to experience the art he continues to create.

For Ferrara, losing his sight changed the way he creates, but it never took away his imagination.

His vision is still there. Now, he has found a new way to bring it to life.
