Mayor Mamdani announces fixes, repairs coming to city-owned section of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York City Department of Transportation announced plans to repair a part of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.
The city-owned section of the expressway sits between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Street.
According to the mayor's office, the infrastructure is 20 years past its design life and is deteriorating in addition to carrying more weight than it was designed for. The 10-year rehabilitation will cost $4 billion, and is said to break ground in 2030. Repairs will extend the BQE Central's life for another 40 years.
Business owner Steve said the repairs are ultimately necessary.
“Long-term, I don’t think it’s tenable. It’s got to get fixed somehow,” Steve said.
For drivers facing years of construction, one driver offered a simple piece of advice: “Patience.”
Nearby business owner Emily Diers said she worries construction will worsen existing congestion.
“With the construction, that traffic would increase, the honking would increase,” Diers said.
