Man wounded in shooting steps away from Bronx kids’ center

A 20-year-old man is recovering in the hospital after police say he was shot Thursday morning just steps from a Bronx children’s center.
The shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. on Castle Hill Avenue, near the Castle Houses and the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club.
Neighbors say they heard multiple gunshots ring out in the area.
The shooting happened just feet from the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, where more than a dozen children were inside at the time, according to Jeanette Salcedo, an engagement coordinator with the Castle Hill Office of Neighborhood Safety.
“My brain is still not completely understanding what happened,” Salcedo said.
Parents and community leaders say the shooting is especially unsettling because of how close it happened to children.
“Bullets don’t have a name when they start going off,” Salcedo said.
The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Despite Thursday’s shooting, NYPD data shows shooting incidents in the Castle Hill area are down more than 66% over the last 28 days.
Salcedo says she hopes the violence does not escalate.
“It’s a little uncomfortable, a little unnerving, but hopefully we can get it settled down before anything else happens,” she said.
Police are searching for two masked men who were last seen driving away on a lime-green scooter.
No arrests have been made.
