Lifeguards at a pool in Newark are being credited with helping save a child who suffered a medical emergency Thursday.

The staff members sprang into action just before 10 a.m. when a 13-year-old non-verbal child with autism began suffering a seizure while in a pool at Saint Peter's Park Recreation Center on Lyons Avenue.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, recreation center personnel and lifeguards "removed the child from the water and began life-saving measures."

The child, alert and breathing following the actions of those who assisted him, was then taken to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center for further treatment.
