High-flying thrills filled the skies over Orange County this weekend as the New York Air Show returned to Orange County Airport, bringing thousands of spectators together for a day of aerial stunts, historic aircraft and military demonstrations.

Visitors from across New York and the tri-state area gathered to watch an array of aviation performances, including appearances by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, the event's featured attraction.

"It's a patriotic event, a family-friendly event," said Chris Dirato, director of public relations for the New York Air Show. "We have the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds who are our feature performer, and everyone likes to come out and see the Thunderbirds in action."

Beyond the aerial acrobatics, organizers say the event serves a greater purpose by inspiring future generations and providing the public an opportunity to connect with members of the military.

Dirato added that the event offers an educational experience for families and children interested in aviation and military service.

"You're watching people who are protecting our freedom every day," he said. "And it's an educational moment for kids. You come out and maybe inspire the kids for a career in aviation, or maybe the military."

The New York Air Show continues Aug. 2 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Orange County Airport in Montgomery.

Tickets remain available for those hoping to catch the final day of performances.
