A South Jersey winery is giving visitors more than just a place to enjoy a glass of wine — it's also giving them a history lesson.

News 12's Amanda Eustice visited Saddlehill Winery in Voorhees for this week's Road Trip Close to Home.

The land is steeped in history, dating back to the 1700s, when it was a working farm owned by the Matlack family.

"Timothy Matlack Jr., who was the nephew of the owner of this farm and grew up in Haddonfield, was somewhat of a rabble-rouser," said Bill Green, owner of Saddlehill Winery. "He joined the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, and he had perfect handwriting, so Thomas Jefferson and other founding fathers asked him to be the scribe. He was the one who actually put the Declaration of Independence on parchment."

Over the years, the property evolved. The Stafford family eventually took over the farm, which later became a harness racing training facility.

Today, that history remains woven throughout the property.

From the preserved farmhouse to the surrounding grounds, visitors can get a glimpse of New Jersey's agricultural past while enjoying a modern winery experience.

Over the past two years, Saddlehill Winery has produced more than 12,000 cases of wine.

Guests can enjoy more than 30 varieties of wine, dine at the winery's restaurant, or attend one of the many events hosted on the property throughout the year.

"We have tours Wednesday and Thursday nights for the majority of the year. We have classes and workshops," Green said. "You can come paint and sip, do yoga with the alpacas, and find a lot of things to do here beyond simply enjoying a glass of wine."

Centuries after it began as a working farm, this South Jersey property is still bringing people together — this time over a glass of wine, good food and a little bit of history.
