With temperatures soaring into the triple digits, hundreds of people headed to Van Cortlandt pool to beat the extreme heat Thursday.

People started lining up as early as 9 a.m. before the pool opened at 11. One woman, who said she’s been coming to the pool for about 50 years, told News 12 she was first in line and wishes pools would open even earlier during heat waves.

Because of the extreme heat, New York City is extending outdoor pool hours through Saturday. Instead of closing at 7 p.m., pools will remain open until 8:30 p.m.

Even while cooling off in the water, city officials remind swimmers to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and take precautions in the dangerous heat. They also warn the pavement around pools can become extremely hot, so sandals are recommended when entering and exiting the pool.
