An investigation is underway in the Fordham section of the Bronx after multiple New York City police officers were injured and a suspect was shot during an officer-involved shooting Sunday evening, according to police.

The incident happened along East Fordham Road, where a large police presence remained for hours as investigators worked the scene.

Police said around 5:35 p.m., officers learned that a vehicle traveling through Washington Heights had been reported stolen the day before.

According to investigators, six unmarked NYPD vehicles moved in and attempted to stop the car, instructing passengers inside to exit the vehicle.

Authorities said the driver then suddenly put the vehicle in reverse, striking one of the unmarked police vehicles and hitting multiple members of the NYPD.

Police said the vehicle then struck a sergeant, knocking him to the ground, before the driver attempted to flee the scene.

At that point, an officer fired at the driver, striking the suspect.

The suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment. Police said the injured sergeant, along with several other officers hurt during the incident, were also transported to a hospital and are in stable condition.

Investigators said the suspect had previously been arrested earlier this year in connection to an alleged shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing.
