New York City’s housing crisis is in focus as mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani unveils a plan to build 400,000 affordable housing units over the next decade.

The proposal comes amid ongoing concerns about vacant rent-stabilized apartments across the city.

News 12 spoke with Kenny Burgos, CEO of the New York Apartment Association, who says thousands of units remain empty due to current policies that limit repairs and renovations.

City officials say they are working to support homeowners.

Department of NYC Buildings Commissioner Ahmed Tigani announced free, no-penalty home inspections available through July 10 via 311, aimed at connecting low-income homeowners with city resources.
