A 69-year-old man was shot in the chest and arm Monday afternoon in Morrisania, according to police.

The shooting happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. near Fulton Avenue and East 170th Street. Police say the victim was taken to Saint Barnabas Hospital in stable condition.

Investigators recovered at least four shell casings from the scene, which remained blocked off for hours as detectives gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses.

The violence unfolded just steps away from a supportive housing and senior mental health facility, as well as a college preparatory high school. A teacher told News 12 that students were briefly placed on lockdown during what would normally be dismissal. The lockdown was later lifted.

A source familiar with the situation tells News 12 the shooting appears to have stemmed from a weekend argument between the victim and the suspected shooter. The source says the two men knew each other prior to the shooting.

According to the source, the victim is believed to have some connection to the nearby supportive housing and senior mental health facility, through a family member or friend associated with the building.

No arrests have been announced. Police have not released information on a possible suspect.
