Police are issuing an urgent reminder for residents to lock up their vehicles.. It comes as police see a rise in car break-ins and thefts in the Hudson Valley.

"Police agencies throughout Westchester County have recently seen an increase in vehicle thefts involving cars left unsecured with keys or key fobs inside," according to a Facebook post by the City of Rye Police Department.

Agencies in other areas, including Dutchess County, are tracking recent car break-ins.

"The Town of Wappinger has recently seen at least two thefts from vehicles and car break-ins throughout our community. I urge all residents to remain vigilant, lock their vehicle doors at all times, and avoid leaving valuables, keys, wallets, or other personal belongings visible inside their cars," said a message from Wappinger Town Supervisor Joseph D. Cavaccini.

Officials are urging everyone to stay vigilant, report suspicious activity and never leave valuables or keys in their vehicles.

"For us to see anything like this, it is rare and we try to get ahead of it," Cavaccini told News 12.

Police are reminding everyone to always lock their cars.

"The first thing I do when I get out of my car, just lock it up," said Elvis, who was driving through Westchester County Tuesday.
