Advocates are calling for an end to gun violence after a shooting left a man hurt in Yonkers.

Members of Yonkers SNUG gathered Thursday at the corner of Herriot and Jackson streets to tell the community that they're here to help. It comes just two days after a shooting in this area.

"A sad thing that happened, a close friend of mine," said Peter Thompson, with Yonkers SNUG.

A man was shot in the arm on Tuesday afternoon, according to police. At last check, no one has been arrested.

"I heard the pops, I was standing right by my bedroom window," says Yonkers City Councilwoman Tasha Diaz.

Diaz says she was getting ready to leave home when those shots rang out.

"I saw cars flying by. I see people scattering. That's when I said, 'I have to step into action.' I made sure the proper authorities were here on the scene," Diaz tells News 12.

Officials with SNUG say the number of shootings is down so far this year. New data at the county level shows violent crime dropped across Westchester last year.

"Shootings is down, but we shouldn't have shootings anywhere," says Thompson.

Thompson and others with SNUG tell News 12 that they aren't giving up on their mission.

"We are going to make sure nothing like this ever happens around here or, hopefully, anywhere in Yonkers, period," says Thompson.
